The Effective Development Co-operation Summit 2022 (or #DevCoSummit), took place in Geneva on 12-14 December 2022. For this first hybrid edition, SCOOCS was the hybrid event technology platform chosen!
The DevCoSummit was hosted by Switzerland as the Co-Chair of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation (GPEDC). The GPEDC is an association of organizations, governments, and civil society structures, bringing together 161 countries and 56 organizations. What is the GPEDC’s mission? The flexibility allowed by hybrid events is one of the answers to overcome some of the challenges faced by the organization of a worldwide intercultural event. Ensuring inclusiveness and measuring the impact of CO2 savings are only some of the benefits.
Hosted mutually by the OECD and the UNDP, the Joint Support Group was the GPEDC governance structure we worked with to build this high-level event. The DevCoSummit counted over 3000 attendees, 28 hybrid sessions with in-person and online speakers, over 5 networking tables, resource libraries, and an event app. Continue to read to discover how the GPEDC leveraged the SCOOCS hybrid event technology to deliver a successful event, empowering the debate on effective cooperation for development for the shared benefits of people, planet, prosperity, and peace.
The DevCoSummit took place over 3 days, combining plenary sessions, spotlight sessions, regional dialogues, and virtual networking tables. The GPEDC event app allowed both online and on-site event attendees to follow all the event sessions in real-time, wherever they were located. The CO2 Calculator presents the amazing number of 2237448kg Co2 emissions saved with this hybrid event model! With the event app, attendees were not only able to follow the sessions on the go, but also to continue the conversation if they wished with in-person and online attendees at networking tables, or in 1-1 video rooms.
With participants from more than 111 countries around the globe, the GPEDC team needed a platform with simultaneous translation in multiple languages. This was possible with the SCOOCS RTMP channels, which enabled the event to have simultaneous interpretation in English, French, and Spanish. Attendees were able to easily switch the language of the session with a drop-down menu, available both on the desktop online event platform and on the event app.
The event platform and the mobile event app favor different spontaneous networking moments. In the event feed, attendees have shared their impressions of the sessions and the event, generating several emoji reactions from their peers. The match roulette on the event platform or the random match mode on the event app facilitated impromptu conversations.
But it’s also important to include networking moments in the event program. The GPEDC implemented these moments with the networking tables, available on the event platform and app. Themes like “Hopes from the 2022 Summit” or “Lessons learned” were held with the help of this event tool.
Sending new announcements on the event platform and push notifications regularly on the event app was an effective way to increase the audience attendance at the summit sessions. With the floating communication center, attendees could access the event feed and announcements on all the event platform modules, increasing attendees’ engagement and participation.
The SCOOCS hybrid event technology enabled flexibility and inclusiveness during the discussions about effective development cooperation through building trust and inclusivity, improving monitoring, and ensuring transparency and mutual accountability. The event content outcomes are now reflected in the report “Rebuilding trust through effective development co-operation” with a new monitoring model for the Global Partnership.
