SCOOCS launches UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

In 2017, the United Nations proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, to be held from 2021 to 2030. This Decade aims to provide a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support nations’ actions to sustainably manage the Oceans and to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. On June 1st, SCOOCS was proud to be the selected virtual event platform to celebrate the beginning of the Ocean Decade with the High-Level launch. Moreover, from June 2021 onwards, SCOOCS will host a unique and multidisciplinary event series with the theme “Creating the Ocean We Want”.

Challenges

SCOOCS is proud to be the German Federal Ministry of Education’s events trusted partner. To kick-start the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, SCOOCS hosted the High-Level worldwide event, with the theme: Creating the Ocean We Want. The Ocean Decade will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for nations to work together to generate the global ocean science needed to support the sustainable development of our shared ocean.

If you are wondering how SCOOCS can empower you to exceed the needs and expectations of your stakeholders, this short story about how the UN Ocean Decade event team was able to build a scientific digital community connecting scientists, policy-makers, journalists, and global leaders was written for you!

Project Goals

Integrated Multi-language RTMP Livestream Solution

As the first international Ocean Decade Conference, offering simultaneous multi-language translation was one of the primary requirements. SCOOCS integrated RTMP livestream solution allowed the event hosts to offer a seamless localised experience into seven different languages.

Build a Digital Scientific Community

The High-Level launch was only the beginning of a series of Ocean Decade laboratories that will take place from July 2021 to May 2022. Laboratories are innovative formats that function as self-sustaining events, acting as a creative platform to link diverse stakeholders on topics to trigger collaboration efforts in regard to the UN Ocean Decade. By providing a virtual space to connect scientists, policy-makers, journalists, and global leaders, SCOOCS provides the long-term platform for catalysing partnerships and co-designing the UN Ocean Decade actions.

Showcase Satellite Events

With the goal of complementing the Ocean Decade’s Laboratories core events, satellite activities will also be independently hosted with the aim of showcasing endorsed Ocean Decade actions, creating opportunities for exchange, collaboration, and partnerships, as well as raising visibility and awareness of the Ocean Decade. By leveraging SCOOCS free Media Library, each satellite activity was offered a unique virtual promotion space with a detailed description, open Q&A channel, and a representative for 1-1 communication.

Outcome

From June 2021 onwards, the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO hosted for an average of 10,000 attendees from all across the globe, 8 core events, and many more satellite activities.
